An artist's impression of Charles II on his return from exile, meeting the Mayor of Dover, Thomas Broome, on Dover beach, on 25th May 1660. The Mayor presented the King with an address and a Bible as he came on shore. The Dover Corporation Mace was made in memory of this event, and is a hallmarked Silver gilt Mace, with a crowned head. dated London 1676. It was apparently made by Master Thomas Backhouse, Ironmonger, being 'Maior of Stafford'. The piece is 3 feet 10½ inches in length, and weighs 108 ozs.
